It is not about the score, we dont not even keep it. You need to make it fun. Keep everybody equally involved. If they have learned how to do something today or corrected a wrong technique, and they have fun, you have done your job. Here is an outline to use for your pre-season. Try to have different stations and prevent 10 girls from watching one or two. You can have each station (coach) doing something different and the girls rotate through. You should be able to have 6 or more practices before your first game. Practice One Introduce skills, and work on motor skills. Uses whiffle balls if possible. Introduce the throwing and catching techniques. Play catch- one coach with a semi circle of 3 or 4 girls, each player throwing to the coach only, no gloves- two hand catches (make it easy- only 20 feet between you and the girls). Throw game balls to a target on a fence. Throw balls from a distance into a basket or bucket (working hand-eye coordination). Roll ground balls using game balls and introduce using the glove. Practice conditioning by running the bases, home to home, using a circular pattern around the bases (get them out of the habit of having to run in the square pattern (not having to stop or slow down to turn towards the next base) Practice the correct swinging with no tee or ball first. Hit off the tee into a fence. Dont worry or try non tee coach toss until later on. Focus on proper swing mechanics. The batter should start with their left foot about even with the back part of the tee base. Their belly button should not be even with the tee post. This does not promote teaching to make contact with the ball out in front parallel with the front foot. Practice Two- Introduce the catch of the thrown ball using a glove (use tennis balls) and have it be coach thrown, 1 coach to 3 or 4 girls lined up. Repeat practice one items As a player becomes more confident in a consistent hand starting position and is consistently hitting the ball first, then instruct them on pushing off the back leg squish the bug under your foot by rotating the ball of their back foot during the swing, hands thru the ball, and more bat speed thru hand quickness. Practice 3- Introduce groundballs with a game ball Work on catching low lob pop-ups using a waffle ball Have a speed running contest around the bases for time (give a token prize maybe) Talk about positions on the field, which plays where. Repeat other material, including tee hitting Practice 4- Practice long tosses with a game ball (throwing to no one, but toward a specific target, like a base, or make it more fun with a toy or object). Have a contest to see how far and straight they can throw the ball. Coach their technique. Work on rolling grounders that have a bounce Start working on infield fielding and throwing the ball to first base. Start using a game ball to play catch, one coach- to- several players Repeat other drills Practice 5- Introduce the concept of the force out. Try positioning your players and discuss where to throw the ball for force outs, and returning the ball to the pitcher circle to stop runners. Repeat this at your remaining practices. Use coach thrown balls to simulate game. Introduce live t-hitting with an infield learning to play defense. The other half of the team can do other drills. Repeat others Practice 6- Start introducing some coach pitch using waffle balls to get ready for coach pitch in the season. Do tee warmups hitting on the side, before they take coach pitch swings. Practice 7 and 8- (accelerate to an earlier practice if you wont have this many practices before playing your first game) Simulate a game for part of practice and work on other skills your team has particular weaknesses in. Coaching skills tips HITTING Batting -- the stance, swing and follow-through Adjust the tee with ball height set even to the hitter's waist. The foot closest to the playing field (lead foot) should be no further forward to start than almost even with, but still behind the batting tee post (a taller player would have the front foot even with the back part of the tee base), with feet spread shoulder-width apart. Bend knees, body in slight crouch. Weight on balls of feet. Grip bat; hands together above knob. Hold bat firmly; don't squeeze. Bring bat up and away from the body. Keep shoulders level; bat and head steady. Eyes on the ball. Short slide step with the front foot at start of swing. Bring the hands towards the ball straight from the shoulder area, thus causing a level or slightly downward swing and bring the bat through the center of the ball. Watch bat hit ball; keep head down. Weight shifts to front foot; back foot stays on the ground (squish the bug with the balls of the back foot). Extend arms and follow through; swing around. Drop the bat; do not throw it Key points: eyes on the ball no cross-handed hold position of feet stride [weight shift] rotation the swing FIELDING Eyes on the ball. Watch the ball go into the glove. Cover the ball with the other hand (alligator hands) Ground Ball Stand legs apart, shoulder-width or wider. Bend knees. Get low. Lean forward. Run to the ball. Keep body in front of ball. Glove low to the ground. Scoop or catch the ball and cover it. Fly Ball Run to where the ball is going. Call for the ball: "I've got it." Stop and wait for the ball. Hands together, fingers up, shoulder high or over the head. Watch ball into the glove and cover. Thrown Ball Bend knees slightly. Watch the ball. On a ball thrown to player above the waist: Hands together facing out; thumbs up. Catch and cover. On a ball thrown below the waist: Hands together facing down; little fingers touching. Catch and cover. THROWING Grip and motion Thumb under the ball. Two or three (maybe even 4)fingers on top. Don't worry about the seams. Eyes on the target. Legs apart; foot on throwing arm side behind the body. Arm back and up (figure L), shoulders turned toward target( creating an imaginary line from one shoulder to the other and straight towards the target). Step toward target with foot opposite the throwing arm. Right-hander with left foot; left-hander with right foot. Push off on back foot as throw begins; end with weight on forward foot. Release the ball in front of body and follow through. RUNNING Base running Run on the balls of the feet. Teach them to run as fast as they can; only concentrating on the task of the base runner. Pump arms back and forth. After the ball is hit Run behind the tee, unless left-handed. Look at first base, not where the ball has gone. Run outside the foul line. Run straight through (past) first base- orange safety base; don't jump on it or slow down. Watch and listen to coach for instructions. When on base keep one foot touching the base until the next batter hits the ball. Lean forward; when ball is hit, push off base. Know where the ball is. When passing a base, try to touch it towards the edges of the base and not the middle of the base (it may be slippery when damp, and teaches them to get ready for good base running skills for the next age level). 2:;At L M p ӿӫucuQ?Q*)hoCh5>*CJOJQJ\^JaJ#hoChLDLCJOJQJ\^JaJ#hoChwCJOJQJ\^JaJ#hoChoCCJOJQJ\^JaJ#hoChu&CJOJQJ\^JaJ#hoChCJOJQJ\^JaJ#hoChGSCJOJQJ\^JaJ&hoChGS5CJOJQJ\^JaJ&hoChoC5CJOJQJ\^JaJ&hoCh5CJOJQJ\^JaJ/hoChGS5B* CJOJQJ\^JaJph3fAt L z &4Ez/;'gdu&$a$gdoCgdCI[$ !
